Critique #5: Big Hero 6 and it's depiction of grief

Image
Post link: In Brightest Day: Big Hero 6  and Grief Big Hero 6 's depiction of grief is something that I think is so important and is honestly one of the reasons why it's one of my favorite movies of all time. So many movies (especially children's movies) have such shitty depictions of grief. It's usually something along the lines of one character dies, the main character screams " NOOOOOO!!!! " as a tear slips down their cheek and then they go about their day. It's like directors are afraid to show what grief and mourning really looks like. But Big Hero 6  does something different in the sense that they actually show an accurate depiction of grief. After Tadashi dies, we actually get to see how Hiro falls into depression as he's forced to grapple with the fact that his brother is no longer there. This is a reality for so many people who have lost a loved one and yet this is one of the first times we really get to see it on-screen. And not only is the d...

Critique #4: PinkNews article on LGBT representation in BAYMAX! and the discourse surrounding it

Article link: New Disney series BAYMAX! praised for showing trans person buying period products I titled this critique post "PinkNews article on LGBT representation in BAYMAX! and the discourse surrounding it" but let's be honest, it's not really discourse, it's just butthurt bigots getting all pissy while the queers try to knock some sense into them. In this article, we once again see conservatives getting all angsty about the fact that Disney's latest addition to the Big Hero 6  universe portrays very real bodily functions like menstruation and very real human emotions like same-sex attraction. We get the usual argument claiming that Disney is pushing some sort of agenda surrounding kids and sexuality and that educating children on the concepts of menstruation and homosexuality is somehow inappropriate. But what this article shows that the other articles I've presented don't is the LGBTQ+ community's response to these statements. I think this i...

Critique #3: Tumblr post discussing Honey Lemon's ethnicity and Disney's Hispanic representation

Image
Post link: Seanan's Tumblr A common debate I found while scouring the internet for Big Hero 6 -related discussions regarded Disney's Hispanic representation and specifically Honey Lemon, the quirky chemistry whiz who believes that pink makes everything better (and she'd be correct). Honey Lemon contributes to Big Hero 6 's overall diverse cast by being Hispanic, complete with a Latin accent and earbuds playing Spanish music. But many viewers have made complaints claiming that Honey Lemon isn't really "portrayed as" Hispanic. It's certainly been one hell of a debate. On one hand, some people are just happy to have a Latina character, but others are upset that Disney supposedly did it "wrong." The main argument I found in these Tumblr posts was that Honey Lemon doesn't "look" Hispanic. She's tall, lacks curves, and she's too pale with green eyes and dirty-blonde hair. They claim that if Disney wanted to do Hispanic represe...
