Critique #2: Movieguide article on how the LGBT representation in BAYMAX! promotes the sexualization of children's media

Article link: Disney's BAYMAX Series Promotes LGBT Characters and Sexual Content to Children As soon as I first read this article I knew I had to include it in this project. It’s genuinely hilarious to me how much bullshit people are able to shove into one movie review. Honestly, I find it an immediate red flag when someone refers to men and women as “males” and “females.” Whoever wrote this seems like the kind of guy to ask a trans person, “Oh, but what’s in your pants?” Okay, maybe this isn’t even about Big Hero 6 but rather Disney Pixar’s LIGHTYEAR but it still falls into the same category as far as bigotry goes. This one makes me laugh at the hypocrisy of how religious conservatives complain about how the LGBT community is “indoctrinating our children” and then immediately turn around and push their biblical views. Still so, so funny to me. Jesus isn’t going to suck your dick, bud. Here’s my last little thought: Big Hero 6 and BAYMAX! have done so much more for me and taught...

Critique #1: The University of Minnesota Women's Center blog praises Big Hero 6's diverse cast

Article link: Big Hero 6: Disney finally does representation right. The representation and diversity that’s presented in Big Hero 6 is one of the reasons why it’s one of my favorite movies of all time and this article explains my exact thoughts incredibly accurately. When we go outside, we see people of all different shapes, sizes, and colors--it’s unrealistic and honestly quite bothersome for everyone to look the same. That’s something that Big Hero 6 definitely does right. Personally, I just find it so cool how they were able to fit so much diversity into one six-person superhero group… well, five people and one robot. We’ve got a biracial protagonist who is Asian-American, as well as his teammates who are Black, Hispanic, Asian, and the token White guy. And while it’s already impressive to have such a diverse cast, it gets even better when you realize that the voice actors are equally as diverse. Far too often we get POC characters that are played by a bunch of White people behind ...

When you think of contemporary art pieces that influence and advance, Disney’s   Big Hero 6   might not be the first thing to come to your mind. But in actuality, this movie tackles a variety of different topics, including diversity, grief, and even LGBTQ+ representation. Big Hero 6  follows 14-year-old Hiro Hamada, a talented young inventor from the fictional city of San Fransokyo who seeks to follow in his older brother Tadashi’s footsteps and study robotics in college. But after Tadashi passes away attempting to rescue his professor from a building fire at his university, Hiro is determined to figure out what--or who--caused the fire that killed his brother, thinking it’s the only thing that can bring him closure. With help from his friends and an inflatable healthcare robot named Baymax that Tadashi invented, Hiro forms a team of superheroes with the mission to hunt down the villain that killed Tadashi. Big Hero 6  is a Disney movie and--like many Disney movies--...
